Prospect Profile: Armon Johnson
We continue our series with a profile of Nevada point guard Armon Johnson.
A highly athletic combo-guard, Armon Johnson is making waves in the days leading up to the 2010 NBA Draft.
Johnson is fresh off a fantastic junior season that saw him average 15.7 points, 5.6 assists and 3.4 boards for Nevada, receiving Second Team All-WAC honors along the way. The point guard started all 34 games for the Wolfpack, scoring in double figures 31 times and topping the 20-point plateau on six occasions. He also recorded a career-high 12 assists twice vs. Hawaii and Houston.
Blessed with tremendous size for a point guard, Johnson measures in at 6-foot-3, 195-pounds. Combined with his extraordinary quickness and athleticism, he is a mismatch for the opposition at both ends of the court. Offensively, Johnson is an explosive scorer, using his speed and brute strength to barrel his way to the rim. If he learns to hit the outside jumper on a more consistent basis, he will be near impossible to guard in the NBA. Defensively, Johnson loves to get after it and pester the ball handler, using his size and long reach to shut down his opponent.
At this point in his development, Johnson is more of a combo guard than a true point thanks mostly to his natural ability to score at will. But with the proper tutelage, many believe he has what it takes to be a true floor leader and dynamic player for years to come.
